Selecting a Contractor — part two

Setting Up Interviews

It is a good idea to talk to at least 3 contractors. Set up a time to interview each contractor in person. Be diligent and patient while qualifying contractors. It will pay off in saving you time, money, and aggravation later on down the road.

During the interview you are giving the contractor an opportunity to show you he is trustworthy, qualified to complete your project, and financially stable. The contractor, architect, and you will be working together as a team. The interview is your opportunity to get to know the contractor and learn how it will be to work with them as a team member.

  • How do they communicate?
  • Are they a good listener?
  • Are they patient with your questions?
  • Do you have a good rapport with them?
  • Are you hiring someone who wants to be part of a team?

When you call to set up the appointment ask them to bring pictures of their work. Also ask them to bring a list of references — people you can talk to and who will let you see the work on jobs completed:

  • • in the last year
(to check the contractor’s current work practices)
  • • and on jobs completed at least 6 to 7 years ago
(so you can see how their work has held up over time)
